Breaking News: Cricket stars Beau Webster and Josh Inglis are set to make a swift return to the Big Bash League (BBL)! Following the rapid two-day conclusion of the Melbourne Test, these players have been granted leave from the Australian squad to participate in one BBL match each before rejoining the team for the Sydney Test. This presents a unique opportunity for fans to see their favorite Test players in action sooner than expected.
Beau Webster will be suiting up for the Hobart Hurricanes, facing the Melbourne Renegades on Monday. Meanwhile, Josh Inglis will be representing the Perth Scorchers against the Sydney Thunder on Tuesday. Both players will then head back to the Test squad, gearing up for the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, commencing on January 4th.
But here's where it gets interesting... Webster, who is yet to feature in the Ashes series, might get a chance in the final Test at the SCG, particularly if Cameron Green doesn't perform well. Inglis, on the other hand, was left out of the MCG match after playing in Brisbane and Adelaide, where he didn't quite capitalize on his starts. The selectors opted to stick with Usman Khawaja in the middle order after his impressive recall.
No other players have been released for BBL duty between the fourth and fifth Tests, but many are expected to join their BBL teams once the Ashes series concludes. Steven Smith is scheduled to play for the Sydney Sixers, while Mitchell Starc might make his first BBL appearance in 11 years, provided he's cleared by the medical staff. Starc has retired from T20Is and won't be in the upcoming T20 World Cup, giving him a potential break after the BBL before the IPL. Josh Hazlewood could also use the tournament to prove his fitness, having missed the entire Ashes due to injuries.
Pat Cummins is on Sydney Thunder's supplementary list, but it's unlikely he'll play. Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne are expected to be available for the Brisbane Heat, as could Michael Neser. Travis Head and Alex Carey might return for the Adelaide Strikers, and Green for the Perth Scorchers. Jhye Richardson will likely rejoin the Scorchers after the final Test. Jake Weatherald (Hobart Hurricanes), Scott Boland (Melbourne Stars), and Brendan Doggett (Melbourne Renegades) could also make appearances.
And this is the part most people miss... The Renegades had hoped to see Nathan Lyon, but his injury has prevented that. Todd Murphy will be able to return to the Sixers' side after the final Test. The current schedule has allowed Test players to participate in the BBL, but this might not be the case next year due to Australia's series in India. There could also be some availability issues for T20 players during the finals, depending on when the squad leaves for Pakistan. The BBL finals begin on January 20, with the final match on the 25th.
