Scientists have discovered a groundbreaking link between a common childhood virus and the autoimmune disease lupus. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), usually harmless, may be the trigger for lupus, an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the body's own tissues. This finding could revolutionize treatments for lupus, which affects around 69,000 people in the UK and has no known cure. The study reveals that EBV can cause immune cells to 'go rogue', leading to joint and muscle pain, extreme tiredness, and skin rashes. The research, conducted by Prof. William Robinson and his team at Stanford University, suggests that EBV is present in 100% of lupus cases. This discovery is particularly surprising as EBV is a common virus contracted from siblings or partners during childhood or adolescence. The virus's ability to deposit its genetic material into DNA means it can remain dormant in cells, potentially triggering lupus in susceptible individuals. The study's findings, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, highlight the importance of further research into EBV as a potential cause of lupus, with ongoing clinical trials for an EBV vaccine and repurposed cancer treatments for severe cases.
