Ex-Tropical Cyclone Mitchell: Severe Weather Hits WA, Here's What to Expect (2026)

Western Australia is bracing for a weather rollercoaster! 🌩️

A former tropical cyclone, Mitchell, has made its way inland, bringing a deluge of rain and a muggy atmosphere to the region. But here's the twist: while some areas are experiencing intense rainfall, others are in for a sunny surprise.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) downgraded Cyclone Mitchell to an ex-tropical cyclone before it made landfall on the Gascoyne coast. Despite this, some areas have been drenched, with Gascoyne Junction recording a staggering 132mm of rain since Monday morning. Shark Bay Airport also received a substantial amount of rain, with 104.2mm in just 48 hours.

And this is where it gets interesting: while the south-west Gascoyne region is still enduring heavy rainfall, including in Bullardoo, Greenough River, and Pindarring Rocks, the capital city of Perth has been spared the worst.

A severe weather warning is in effect for central Wheatbelt and parts of Gascoyne and Central West, with expected rainfall between 25mm and 50mm. Flash flooding is a concern in these areas. Meanwhile, a cyclone advice warning remains for Shark Bay and Denham, including the popular tourist destination, Monkey Mia.

But there's a silver lining for Perth residents. The city has only received a mere 2.2mm of rain in the last day, and the BoM predicts a gradual return to sunny skies and dry heat. By Wednesday, the city will bask in mostly sunny weather, and the rest of the week promises sunny days with temperatures reaching up to 30°C.

So, is this a case of 'all's well that ends well' for Perth? Or is there more to this weather story than meets the eye? Share your thoughts on how weather systems can bring both challenges and relief to different regions.
