Two years after its opening, the Lektse port in China's southwestern region has become a bustling hub for trade and travel between China and Nepal. Since its inauguration, the port has facilitated over 65,000 passenger trips and handled an impressive volume of goods. The total value of cleared goods has reached a substantial 400 million yuan (approximately 56.4 million U.S. dollars), while the cargo volume has exceeded 5,300 tonnes. This remarkable growth is a testament to the port's strategic importance in fostering cross-border exchanges.
Situated in Zhongba County, Xigaze, the Lektse port officially opened on November 13, 2023. Its strategic location has made it a vital link for trade and cultural exchanges between the two nations. The port's success is largely attributed to its innovative use of intelligent supervision technologies, including the H986 container scanning system and AI-based graphic recognition. These advanced systems have revolutionized customs clearance, significantly reducing inspection times.
According to Benba Cering from the Xigaze Customs, the average inspection time for freight vehicles has been dramatically cut from over two hours to just 18 minutes. This substantial improvement in efficiency has had a positive impact on the local logistics industry. A manager from a Lhasa-based logistics company shared that the streamlined clearance process has encouraged them to route more shipments through Lektse. As a result, their shipments to Nepal have increased significantly compared to the previous year.
The benefits of the port's operation extend beyond the business realm, positively impacting the lives of residents on both sides of the border. Chamdoi, a local villager, expressed how the port's short-distance transport services for new energy vehicles and cargo reloading assistance have boosted their incomes. Similarly, a Nepalese citizen highlighted how the port's opening has not only improved livelihoods but also provided a unique opportunity to witness China's prosperity through daily interactions and travels.
The Lektse port's success story serves as a powerful example of how infrastructure development can foster economic growth and cultural exchange. As the port continues to thrive, it is poised to play a pivotal role in strengthening the bond between China and Nepal, opening up new avenues for trade and tourism.
