The world's oceans are in crisis, and it's time for a united front! Leading shipping companies have joined forces to tackle the devastating impact of plastic pollution on our seas. The Maritime Association for Clean Seas (MACS) is a groundbreaking alliance with a bold mission: to significantly reduce plastic and operational waste in the maritime industry.
But here's the catch: while the maritime sector is not the primary contributor to this pollution, even small incidents like cargo losses or improper waste handling can have severe consequences. With 14 million tonnes of plastic entering marine ecosystems annually, the industry must step up. And that's exactly what MACS aims to do!
MACS is founded by Seven Clean Seas (SCS), an organization dedicated to ocean conservation, and includes prominent members like Berge Bulk and X-Press Feeders. Together, they are addressing the growing plastic challenge faced by oceans, which facilitate 90% of global trade and support over 2 million seafarers. By promoting best practices, innovation, and collaboration, MACS strives to protect the very waters that sustain global trade.
This initiative builds upon the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Plastic Marine Litter Action Plan, responding to the global call for coordinated action. MACS brings together maritime leaders to share knowledge, reduce plastic use, and inspire change across sectors. But the real power lies in collective action for measurable results.
SCS has a proven track record of tackling plastic pollution at its source, operating in heavily polluted coastal regions. MACS will focus on sustainable procurement, vessel waste management, and improved portside waste reception for 2026. These efforts align with the IMO's 2030 Action Plan and SCS's goal to recover 100 million kilograms of plastic and improve 200,000 lives by 2030.

And this is where it gets controversial: MACS's founding members represent diverse sectors, from bulk carriers to ship management and offshore operations. They share a commitment to environmental leadership, but will their individual interests align with the alliance's goals?
Berge Bulk's Michael Blanding emphasizes their obligation to protect the oceans, while X-Press Feeders' Francis Goh acknowledges the responsibility to address waste and plastic challenges. Britoil Offshore Services' Florent Kirchhoff and Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement's Elena Pantazidou also express their dedication to sustainability. But will these commitments translate into meaningful action?
