It's a shock to the system, isn't it? Owned by media giant Paramount Skydance, MTV will be shutting down MTV Music, MTV Hits, and its nostalgic 80s and 90s music shows in the UK and across Europe by the end of the year. Sources confirm that France, Germany, Poland, Australia, and Brazil are also on the chopping block. It's an undeniable "end of an era," as heartbroken fans and former MTV VJs – those iconic faces who graced millions of screens at the network's peak – are lamenting.
But here's where it gets controversial... Is this really a surprise? Kirsty Fairclough, a screen studies professor at Manchester Metropolitan University, argues that the conditions that made MTV revolutionary simply don't exist anymore. The rise of digital streaming platforms like YouTube and TikTok has fundamentally changed how we engage with music and visuals. We now crave instant access and interactivity, something that passively watching music videos on TV just can't provide. Think about it: when was the last time you waited for a specific music video to air on TV?
James Hyman, a director and producer for MTV Europe's dance music shows in the 90s, echoes this sentiment. He recalls the excitement of MTV in a pre-internet world. "It was so exciting, because that's mainly all people had," he said. MTV was the go-to source for music discovery and visual entertainment.
Hyman was a key player in MTV's Party Zone, which celebrated dance and club culture, showcasing up-and-coming techno, house, and trance music. Alongside VJ Simone Angel, he helped shape the sound of a generation. But their journey took a turn when MTV Europe fragmented into regional subsidiaries, shifting its focus from music to reality shows in the early 2000s.
"I was heartbroken when it started to split up into different regions. To me that was like the beginning of the end," Angel confessed. And this is the part most people miss... It wasn't just the rise of the internet, but also MTV's internal changes that contributed to its decline.
According to audience research, MTV Music reached approximately 1.3 million UK households in July 2025. Compare that to 2001, when MTV UK and Ireland's music channels reached over 10 million homes, and the decline is stark.
Angel believes that MTV's departure from original, edgy music content, which was crucial for breaking smaller artists, was a major misstep. "Initially MTV Europe wasn't just about making the most amount of money… that sense of experimentation made the channel very exciting," she explained. The willingness to take risks and champion new sounds is what set MTV apart in its early days.
Paramount's cost-cutting measures, following its merger with Skydance, have further accelerated the changes. The company announced 1,000 job cuts and is reviewing its cable television offerings. While some MTV music channels will remain in the US, and the flagship MTV HD channel will be available in the UK, the focus will be on entertainment rather than music.
"The 'M' stood for music, and that's gone," laments Hyman, who treasures his VHS tapes of Party Zone shows. These tapes offer a glimpse into the past: intimate interviews with The Prodigy and Aphex Twin, funky, experimental music videos, and outrageous hairstyles. They are a time capsule of a bygone era.
Fairclough emphasizes the "seismic" impact of MTV and MTV Europe during their peak. They brought both established and emerging artists into homes worldwide, fundamentally reshaping popular music. "It definitely marks the end of an era in how music is experienced, both visually and culturally, because MTV really fundamentally reshaped popular music," she concludes.
