Imagine a young pitcher with a blazing fastball that touches 101 mph, a repertoire of secondary pitches that leave batters baffled, and the potential to dominate at the highest level. That's Luis Perales, a 22-year-old prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization who's generating serious buzz. While the Red Sox have recently seen promising talents like Roman Anthony, Marceo Mayer, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Kristian Campbell make their MLB debuts, Perales stands out as a particularly intriguing arm.
Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow didn't hold back his enthusiasm when discussing Perales, labeling him as possessing “elite stuff.” But here's where it gets interesting: Breslow's praise goes beyond just raw talent. He highlights Perales' impressive performance in the Arizona Fall League, where he racked up strikeouts despite battling some control issues.
“The most important thing is getting him back on the field,” Breslow emphasized, acknowledging Perales' recent return from surgery. “We’ve seen elite stuff... Fastball velo to 101 mph, I think, the secondaries that generate a ton of whiffs.”
And this is the part most people miss: While Breslow sees Perales as a potential frontline starter, the Red Sox are open to a controversial move. To expedite his path to the majors, they're considering shifting him to the bullpen.
“We’ll want to make sure we keep the path to starting open,” Breslow explained, “but if that means in the short term, we need to take on some trade-offs (and slide him to the bullpen) to help us win big league games, we’d be prepared to do that.”
This raises a fascinating question: Is sacrificing Perales' long-term development as a starter worth the short-term gain of having his electric arm in the bullpen?
Signed as an international free agent in 2019, Perales currently ranks as the Red Sox's ninth-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline. His journey from international signee to potential MLB impact player is one to watch closely.
