My beloved GP, Dr. C, is retiring after nearly 50 years of dedicated service. This news has left me feeling a profound sense of loss, as our relationship has been a cornerstone of my healthcare journey. From childbirth to menopause, and through the challenges of aging, Dr. C has been my steadfast guide, offering reassurance, education, and a listening ear. The bond between a patient and doctor is unique, involving vulnerability, trust, and the sharing of intimate details. Dr. C has heard my fears, concerns, and even my midnight musings about health conditions. As I reflect on our journey, I realize that my fears have evolved from postpartum worries to concerns about high cholesterol and joint pain. Despite my propensity to worry, Dr. C has always been there to provide guidance and support. He has a unique approach, using props like a book with illustrations of the human body to explain complex medical concepts, making him an old-style GP in the best sense. His appointments were never transactional but rather a collaborative effort to achieve the best health outcomes. The decision to retire was not easy for Dr. C, but he is looking forward to spending more time with his family. Yet, the thought of leaving his patients is bittersweet. He acknowledges the challenges of continuity of care, a topic that has been extensively studied. A University of Cambridge study found that seeing the same GP improves patient health and reduces doctor workloads. However, the trend in modern healthcare is moving away from this model, with patients often seeing different doctors. Dr. Bryan Betty, chair of GPNZ, highlights the importance of continuity of care, especially for the chronically ill, but also acknowledges the challenges, including workforce shortages and cost implications. Dr. C's retirement is a reminder of the value of long-term relationships in healthcare, and I am grateful for the wisdom and compassion he has shared with me throughout the years.
