Spotify’s Listening Age Feature: Delight, Dismay, and What It Says About You! (2026)

Ever feel like your music taste is aging you? Spotify's new 'listening age' feature is sparking a flurry of reactions, ranging from amusement to mild existential dread. It's a fun, quirky addition to the platform's annual Wrapped feature, designed to give users a personalized snapshot of their year in music. But, is it all just a bit of harmless fun, or does it tap into something deeper about how we perceive ourselves and our relationship with music?

This year's Wrapped feature has introduced 'your listening age,' which uses your listening data to guess your 'musical maturity.' Many users have found themselves surprised by the results. Some Gen Z users discovered their listening habits pegged them as old-timers, while others were shocked to find their musical tastes made them sound much younger.

For instance, the artist Grimes jokingly attributed her listening age of 92 to her love of 'the oldies.' Mark Morgan, a 37-year-old ecologist, was assigned a listening age of 72. He wasn't particularly bothered, chalking it up to his fondness for Linda Ronstadt's 1970 hit, 'Long Long Time.' "It maybe makes you feel a little less cool," he admitted, but he also noted that the song's inclusion in the TV show The Last of Us probably influenced his listening habits.

On the other hand, John Howes, aged 67, was delighted to discover his musical age was 17, thanks to his exploration of new music for a local music-sharing group. In a generational twist, Jon Porter, a 60-year-old logistics consultant, was assigned a listening age of 21, thanks to his exposure to the Irish singer CMAT. Meanwhile, his 21-year-old daughter, Bethan, was given a listening age of 59!

But here's where it gets controversial... The feature's underlying data science is relatively simple. Spotify bases it on the 'reminiscence bump,' the tendency to listen to music from our formative years. It analyzes your listening history, compares it to others in similar age groups, and then playfully estimates your listening age.

The real genius of this feature lies in its ability to encourage sharing. As Troy Osinoff, a digital marketing entrepreneur, puts it, "Spotify Wrapped is the most successful marketing tactic of the last 10 years... built on one simple idea: people are obsessed with themselves."

Speaking of success, Taylor Swift was the most streamed artist on Spotify in the UK for the third year in a row, followed by Drake, Sabrina Carpenter, and The Weeknd. The most streamed song was Alex Warren’s Ordinary.

And this is the part most people miss... While Wrapped is a marketing triumph, it's not without its critics. A competing campaign, 'Unwrapped,' takes aim at Spotify's hosting of AI-generated music and its acceptance of ads from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE's role in enforcing aggressive immigration policies has drawn considerable controversy, leading to protests and arrests. Spotify has stated that the ads don't violate its policies.

So, what do you think? Did Spotify's 'listening age' feature accurately reflect your musical taste? Does it even matter? Do you think the marketing tactics are a clever way to engage users, or do you find them a bit intrusive? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
