Education Support's annual Teacher Wellbeing Index sheds light on the situation, measuring stress, mental health, and overall wellbeing among teachers and school leaders. The data, gathered from over 3,000 education staff, is concerning.

  • 77% experienced symptoms of poor mental health due to their work.

Sinéad McBrearty, Education Support's chief executive, emphasizes the urgency of the situation, calling for a national retention strategy centered on staff wellbeing. She warns that without it, the education system will continue to suffer.

She describes a relentless cycle of demands, exhaustion, and a feeling of not being able to do a good enough job. This led to her decision to leave, a choice that brought her profound sadness.
