Feeling a bit lost in the YouTube Music shuffle? You're not alone! For over a year, YouTube Music has been tinkering with its 'Now Playing' screen on both Android and iOS, and the latest redesign is generating some buzz.
Let's dive in! Compared to what you're used to, this new look uses clear icons for switching between the 'Song' and 'Video' modes. It's a cleaner approach, and honestly, a welcome change from earlier versions that, quite frankly, made this switch harder to find. This switcher is a key part of how many of us use YouTube Music, so removing it would have been a major disruption. Plus, it keeps the music video library front and center.
Now, the carousel, progress bar, and playback controls are staying put. However, the progress bar is getting a modern makeover with rounded corners and a dynamic playhead that thickens when you're actively scrubbing through the song. It's a nice touch that mirrors the look of the main YouTube app.
But here's where it gets controversial... The biggest shakeup is happening with the three bottom tabs. 'Up Next' is being renamed to reflect the album, playlist, or mix you're currently enjoying. Google is removing the 'Lyrics' and 'Related' tabs. To find the 'Related' content, you'll now need to tap the song name.
And what about those lyrics? They're moving into the carousel. Some versions place them right after the thumbs up/down buttons, while others hide them slightly. The first option seems better, given how often people use the lyrics feature. This allows for a dual-pane view, cleverly combining your playback controls with the queue. It's a smart idea, but it does mean moving some of the app's most-used features around.
Over the past few days, more users are seeing this redesign, but it's not a widespread rollout just yet. Hopefully, YouTube Music has found the sweet spot and will soon roll out this design to everyone, ending the A/B testing that began last November.
What do you think of these changes? Do you like the new icons and the modernized progress bar? Are you happy about the lyrics and related content changes? Share your thoughts in the comments – let's get a discussion going!
