A McLaren boss' end-of-season speech has sparked controversy and left fans divided. Zak Brown, the CEO, delivered a hilarious yet controversial address, poking fun at his drivers, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
The speech, delivered in front of team employees, began with Brown acknowledging the risks taken on both drivers. He joked, "We took big risks on you guys, and don't pretend you had better options, Alpine was a mess!" This light-hearted dig at Alpine, who finished last in the constructors' standings, set the tone for the rest of the speech.
Brown's speech continued with a tribute to his drivers, praising their speed and sportsmanship. He said, "I couldn't ask for a better duo, both on and off the track. You guys are the McLaren way, proper racers with a unique combination of speed and niceness." But here's where it gets interesting; Brown added, "Maybe next year, we'll be up here saying, 'f*** that guy', referring to himself. A bold statement, leaving many to wonder about the dynamics within the team.
Brown also joked about the team's dynamic, suggesting the drivers were scared of team principal Andrea Stella. "They love me, idolize me, and call me 'Big Daddy' behind my back, but they won't mess with Andrea because they're scared of him," Brown said.
Piastri, known for his early career with Alpine, joined McLaren in 2022 and has since become a key player. Despite the team's insistence on not favoring either driver, which caused controversy this season, Piastri has a lot to smile about. He's set to earn a whopping A$55 million, including a A$41 million bonus, for his third-place finish in the drivers' championship and helping McLaren win the constructors' title.
The 2026 F1 season promises to be an exciting one, with the Australian Grand Prix kicking things off in Melbourne on March 8. Will Piastri stay with McLaren, or will he seek a new challenge with a team like Ferrari or Aston Martin? Only time will tell.
